Utah trip & Bad Gas

Hi all. We're down here in Miami and the daughters family is in Seattle, Wa. area. Each year we meet with them at a Nat'l Park rather than going all the way to Wa. This year was 3rd time back to Moab, Utah. We also have 2 sons living in the New Orleans area and after they 'Promised' to help pay for gas we stopped by and picked em up on the way. Our route is always the same heading west. Miami-Lafayette-Shreveport-Ft.Worth-Amarillo-Albuquerque-Durango-etc. All was fine until we got to Wichita Falls, Tx. on Rt.287. It was late evening and didn't really need gas, BUT, the DW gets 'CRAZY' anytime the gauge gets below 3/4 tank. LOL. I supect her attitude about needing a full tank may be from the 60's when we were dating and I MAY have 'Accidentaly' run outa gas on an Ol dirt road one night. Well, anyways she made me get some. It was still dark about 5 AM and raining and there had been some flooding in that area. I was intending to pull into the 'Loves' gas staion, but turned one driveway too soon and ended up in the Exxon station next to it. What the heck...I filled up 75 gallons anyways. We got back onto Rt.287 and the engine quit about two miles form the station. She's DEAD. NO STARTIE!!! After 2 hours of the DW calling Ford Emergency Service & Good Sam, both of who were busy trying to find where to have us towed to. We REALLY just needed to get off that busy Hyway first. We finally called the W.Falls police who dispatched a local police car & a wrecker that towed us to(Cullar's Truck repair) a General repair facility 2 miles away. Not the fanciest place in the world, but they knew Ford V10's and were great people! Ford finally authorized them to diagnose the problem and they started work on us rite away! BAD GAS!!! It seems the night before, that station had received a new shipment of gas and the driver had neglected to put the cap back on the tank. WELlll...the rain and mud poured into all night and I was one of the 1st to buy gas there that morn. I had a tank full of water and dirt. Sadly, Cullars did not have capability to drop the tank and clean it completely. They simply drained it, flushed the fuel lines and replaced the in line filter. They suggested buying a few extra filters in case there was still some water and dirt that may reclog along the way. The bill was about $700 plus $300 for the tow! Ford says "they don't warranty contaminated fuel problems"! Cullar's suggested I talk to the gas station. Oh Yeah...rite..like that'll do any good. I did anyways and the girl at the counter immediately admitted they had a bad gas delivery and the staion owner was paying any and all cost. Cullars accepted their promise to pay and I was on my way at NO COST...YEAH!!! Well almost. We got up to I-40 heading west toward Albuquerque and it started to bog down again so we pulled over and the son replaced the fuel filter. Good for about another 75 miles. Continued bogging again at about 50 mile intervals. Replacing filter each time. The DW started calling Ford again for more help. They set us up with 'Rich Ford/Truck center' in Albuquerque (IF we could make it) We limped in 1st thing in the morn and and Mike(Service rep) was the best I'd ever delt with and took us in ASAP. Ford dropped the tank and completely flushed/cleaned the entire fuel system the same day. Rich Ford again contacted the Exxon station owner back in Wichita falls who was not so happy this time. But he agreed to pay the additional $1370.00 bill but wouldn't replace the lost gas. I'm happy. Rest of the trip went well. Moab is still great. :B We're back down in Miami waiting for Hurricane IKE ! :E

RE: Keys foer New Years

About the coldest I've seen it is around 78 degrees. I grew up in Ohio and swam in Artisian well water at 68. I learned to hate cold water. Now here in Miami for the past 15 years, I won't get in the pool until its at least 82. Thats even a little cold for me tho. Wright now in August it runs around 87 which is a little too warm.

RE: p-30 exhaust

I had the P30, 454 Chevy years ago. When I replaced, I went to Dual exhaust and brought em out on each side in front of the rear wheels. Really helped the power & hill climbing.

RE: Dometic Refrigerator Burner - does this look right?

Mine was like that, but they performed the Dometic 'Fire Hazard" recall and installed a large metal shield over that. U should check to see if u'r unit is on the Recall list.

RE: F53 Antifreeze Change?? Final UPDATE

A job like this is ALWAYS done better at home. The "professionals" NEVER do it rite. They either don't have time, desire or they just don't know how to do it rite. Especially in N.Y. LOL...how ya spell "rite"?

RE: Digital converter is GREAT

I first bought the Radio Shack Digital Scan model with Pass Thru. I was really impressed except I couldn't program the remote to turn my JVC tv to turn on/off. All else worked tho. I returned to get my 2nd one, but they only had the Zenith DTT901. I bought it anyways. BOY I'm REALLY impressed with this one! The picture is even better and I could program the remote for all functions. I'm gonna just use the Radio Shack one for just the RV.

RE: Homemade Hydrogen Hybred

I expect it might work on some 'Bad mileage' engines. My only worry is what does it do to damage modern engines? If I had an ol 55 Pontiac that got 11 MPG, I'd try it in a second! Kinda worried bout puttin s'thing strange on my 362 HP V-10 tho

RE: Oil Oil everywhere...what shortage?

Just heard a new mileage report...We have NOW driven 40 BILLION miles less this year than this date last year. They've run outa places to store the stuff. We're drowning in it is why the price is now falling.

RE: P-30 fuel delivery problem

I had a P-30, 454 and fought that problem for years before it was found that the coach had settled down on the chassis a bit. Does one of the rear corners look a bit lower than the other or maybe not as much clearance at top of one of the rear wheel wells? This caused a fuel line to rub against the chassis and developed a Small Hole in the rubber line. All would be fine until it was hot outside, softening the rubber slightly. Than when I needed to use more throttle, as when climbing a long hill, the engine would start sucking air thru the chaffed line area and almost die. No backfire or anything like that...just lose power. Let off the gas pedal and it would go away. Stop and shut it down and it would be fine for minutes or maybe days, but it would always come bacck at the worst time. My chaffed spot was above the gas tank. Drove me nuts.

RE: Kids friendly Ocala Florida campground

Silver River St.Pk is wonderful. Giant, beautiful, mostly pull-thru water/electric sites in a woods atmosphere. Dump station. Altho its on the east edge of town, u'd never know u'r not in the wilderness. The famous Silver Springs, glass bottom boat and a great water park are only about 5 miles away.

RE: Ford V-10 Mobil oil filter

That does sound a bit strange. Every filter I've ever installed on anything always took 5 or more turns before it contacts the rubber gasket. After that point only tighten it another turn.
